A book that has haunted me for years!!

I am so excited to have found this book! I am 21 years old and my mother read this book to me once long ago when I was little. It has haunted me ever since that time over the years and I have wanted to find it again. I only was able to hear the story once and never again because my Mom bought it for children at a powwow and gave it to them. I am so glad I will have it again. I plan to read it once more and than give it to children at the school I'm teaching at so they can enjoy it, too. A great message and a lovely story! I would recommend it for girls between 4-10 years of age.

Although the retelling of story is not be perfectly authentic, the story flows well and and the illustrations are of good quality. It does contain some culturally accurate information and would be an excellent addition to a tasteful collecter's children's library.

I loved this bok!
I thought it was a very good story and very cleaver. I liked the deepth of it and meaning. I would buy this book! It has great illlustrations and it is my favorite fairy tale/ picture book! I'm going to buy it! Even though I am almost 12 I still enjoy this book very much!

About the Author
Karen K. Kirst-Ashman is Professor Emerita and former chairperson in the Social Work Department at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where she taught for 28 years. She has written six social work textbooks in multiple editions and numerous publications, articles, and reviews on social work and women's issues. She also has served on the Editorial Board of AFFILIA: Journal of Women and Social Work, and as a consulting editor for many social work journals including the Journal of Social Work Education. Dr. Kirst-Ashman has been a member on the Board of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and has served as a CSWE accreditation site visitor on various occasions. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Wisconsin. She has been the recipient of both the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Roseman Award for Excellence in Teaching and the University Outstanding Teaching Award. She earned her BSW degree and MSSW degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her Ph.D. in social work at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has worked as a practitioner and administrator in child welfare and mental health agencies.

Grafton H. Hull, Jr. (BS, MSW, PhD) has taught at Fort Knox Community College, Morningside College, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Missouri State University, Indiana University Northwest, and, most recently, the University of Utah. He has been a faculty member, department chair, program director, director of a school of social work, and Special Assistant to the Senior Vice President for Accreditation. Among other professional activities, he has served on the CSWE Board of Directors, Commission on Accreditation, Nominations Committee, and as a President of the Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors (BPD). Dr. Hull has been a consultant to over 50 social work programs in the U.S. and Canada and a member of the editorial board or consulting editor for several journals. He is the co-author of seven texts and numerous articles in social work journals. Hull's honors include the Mary Shields McPhee Memorial Award for Faculty Excellence in Research (Utah), Significant Lifetime Achievement Award (BPD), Social Work Educator of the Year (Wisconsin CSWE), and President's Medal of Honor (BPD). His biography is listed in WHO'S WHO IN AMERICA and WHO'S WHO IN THE WORLD.

Brooks/Cole Empowerment Series is by far the most comprehensive and easy to read line of texts in education in social work. It is very easy to be receptive of. Same goes for the Core Competencies books.

About the Author

Darlene Clark Hine is a Board of Trustees professor of African-American studies and professor of history at Northwestern University. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a former president of the Organization of American Historians and of the Southern Historical Association. Hine received her B.A. at Roosevelt University in Chicago and her MA. and Ph.D. from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. Hine has taught at South Carolina State University and at Purdue University. She also taught at Michigan State University where she was John A. Hannah professor of history. She was a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University and at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies at Harvard University. She is the author and/or co-editor of 15 books, most recently The Harvard Guide to African American History (Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 2000), co-edited with Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham and Leon Litwack. She co-edited a two-volume set with Earnestine Jenkins, A Question of Manhood: A Reader in Black Men’s History and Masculinity (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1999, 2001) and one with Jacqueline McLeod, Crossing Boundaries: Comparative History of Black People in Diaspora (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 2000pk). With Kathleen Thompson she wrote A Shining Thread of Hope: The History of Black Women in America (New York: Broadway Books, 1998) and edited More Than Chattel: Black Women and Slavery in the Americas (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1996) with Barry Gaspar. She won the Dartmouth Medal of the American Library Association for the reference volumes co-edited with Elsa Barkley Brown and Rosalyn Terborg-Penn, Black Women in America: An Historical Encyclopedia (New York: Carlson Publishing, 1993). She is the author of Black Women in White: Racial Conflict and Cooperation in the Nursing Profession, 1890–1950 (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1989). Her forthcoming book is entitled The Black Professional Class: Physicians, Nurses, Lawyers, and the Origins of the Civil Rights Movement, 1890–1955.

 

William C. Hine received his undergraduate education at Bowling Green State University, his master’s degree at the University of Wyoming and his Ph.D. at Kent State University. He is a professor of history at South Carolina State University. He has had articles published in several journals, including Agricultural History, Labor History and the Journal of Southern History. He is currently writing a history of South Carolina State University.

 

Stanley Harrold, a professor of history at South Carolina State University, received his bachelor’s degree from Allegheny College and his master’s degree and Ph.D. from Kent State University. He is co-editor of Southern Dissent, a book series published by the University Press of Florida. In 1991-1992 and 1996-1997 he had National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowships. In 2005 he received an NEH Faculty Research Award.  His books include: Gamaliel Bailey and Antislavery Union (Kent, Ohio:  Kent State University Press, 1986), The Abolitionists and the South (Lexington: University Press of Kentucky, 1995), Antislavery Violence: Sectional, Racial, and Cultural Conflict in Antebellum America (co-edited with John R. McKivigan; Knoxville: University of Tennessee Press,  1999), American Abolitionists (Harlow, U.K.: Longman, 2001), Subversives: Antislavery Community in Washington, D.C., 18280-1865 (Baton Rouge: Louisiana State University Press, 2003), The Rise of Aggressive Abolitionism: Addresses to the Slaves (Lexington: University Press of Kentucky, 2004), Civil War and Reconstruction: A Documentary Reader (Oxford, U.K.: Blackwell, 2007) and Border War: Fighting over Slavery before the Civil War (Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2010). He has published articles in Civil War History, Journal of Southern History, Radical History Review and Journal of the Early Republic.

Cute graphics and good prayers help me teach my son how to pray

What I love about this is that I can use it to teach my child to pray. Each spread in the book features a prayer for a specific thing. And it helps me teach my child that prayer isn't just for food or sleeping or for family. Kids can learn that you can also pray for your friends, for school, for animals -- and that it can be about a lot of things like protection, forgiveness, blessing, help, and more! Plus it helps that the graphics are so cute!

Great Prayer Book

I have found that children's prayer books can be excellent resources for teaching children about prayer. The Precious Moments Little Book of Prayers from Tommy Nelson is one such resource. Full of prayers that are just right for children, from prayers about animals to forgiveness, the Little Book of Prayers has some great examples and ideas. We use the prayers in this book as prompts. We read a prayer, and then I encourage my oldest to think of other things to pray for that relate to that prayer. I try to help her understand that we can talk to Yeshua (Jesus) about anything, from itchy mosquito bites to her desire for a puppy.

I like that the Little Book of Prayers is a sturdy board book that my youngest can enjoy too. The prayers are presented through simple rhymes, making them easy to remember. The classic Precious Moments illustrations remind me of my own childhood memories, which makes the book all the more of a treasure. From morning until evening your precious ones will fall in love with this Little Book of Prayers.

Teach Children to Trust in God (Who Is All~Ways in Control) Through Specific Prayers Designed for Daily Interactions

This Little Book of Prayers is an excellent board book for infants to toddlers. The Precious Moments illustrations complement the 18 different prayers offered for little ones to grow in their understanding of God, specific prayer, interacting well with others, and offering daily blessings. The illustrations feature multicultural children in a variety of settings including: God Knows Me (based on Psalm 139) with children at a birthday party; Lord, Keep Me Safe (Psalm 36:7) with 3 toddlers in a barrel sail boat; and A Prayer for the Animals (Job 12:10) which reflects tenderness as children discover the joy and responsibility of caring for the unique creatures they are discovering.
Your precious individual will love turning the pages herself/himself and learning to talk to their Heavenly Father about many of life's situations. Children can learn these prayers through repetition or hand motions as they commit them to memory and treasure them in their hearts. Prayer is a language which calms the heart and helps children to learn that while our world may not be perfect, they can talk personally and specifically to Our Creator about anything they face.

Faith keeps harrowed family together.

I ended up buying a copy of this book based on a made for TV film I had seen years ago. It just turned out that the man I was talking to about the film knew it had been based on a book and knew who wrote it. I hadn't known of the book and as I do enjoy a scare thought I'd give it a whirl.

The first and most scary element is that this book is written by a man of faith, a recognised priest. Robert Curran. You can discount at that point that the book was written to sensationalise. You can also tell that book writing wasn't Robert Curran's strongpoint and rather than dampen the tale it adds more charm to it, there are no superfluos twists and turns.

The Smurls were being terrorised, physically, mentally and spiritually by several entities in the house. One of which was found to be a pure demon. The sounds of squealing pigs and disgusting scents fill the air as the devoutly religious family suffer just about every outrage possible, even the family dog Simon comes in for physical attack.

They go on holiday for a break and the ghastly dark entity follows them, it has learned to mimmick their voices and tease them. Their local clergy has turned their backs, stating that there is nothing there they can't explain, one comes to wonder who they would feel being watched in the bathroom, pushed downstairs or having thumps rampaging through the house followed by the sound of hooves...?

It gets much harder to discount by the minute as their neighbours start to report they too have been visited by the demon and the neighbourhood turns into a circus.

As a read it was very disturbing, enjoyed the tone and timbre of the book which was no frills, facts and discussions of events and people who were present lend it an unsettling amount of credibility.

I was a fan of the film, now I'm also a fan of the book, not many made me switch the light back, this one did!

Entertaining, frightening and an easy read...

I found this book in the many stacks at my inlaws house. I figured it would be something to keep me busy durring the visit. Little did I know that the book would leave my inlaws house forever... It only took me a day and a half to read, I couldn't put it down. I shared the Haunting with my co-workers and soon enough the whole office had read it. Everyone having the same reaction: "I can't believe how hooked I got and how scary it was". I would recomend this book to anyone who is looking for a little fright...

Scary Haunting - I hope it comes back in print

Back in the 1970's, the Smurls bought a duplex with Jack's parents in West Piston, Pa. When they first moved in small but odd stuff started to happen. The children got the worst of it, but it was dismissed as fanciful and magical thinking. Their children said that they saw people floating in their room. It got worse, as Janet actually saw the demon in the basement, after it called out her name in her Mother-in-law's voice!
Jack's parents heard foul language in Jack and Janet's voices and was deeply offended. The mother-in-law saw stuff on her side on the duplex that scared her senseless.
The phenomena became progressively worse, bad smells, horrid visions, and Jack getting raped by a succubus.
The Warrens were in town and they asked to investigate, in which Lorraine Warren discovered three human spirits and a demon. They tried to get an exorcism but the local diocese turned them down because they no longer do exorcisms. So against the Warren's advice, the Smurls taken their case to the media. The demon was VERY pissed and attacked Janet and people's family involved in the case.
The local diocese eventually allowed an exorcism, which granted some peace for a while, then it started-up again. It came back with a vengeance. Then there was yet another exorcism, which it went away for awhile. They had to move because of the media and people would not let-up. It followed them to their next house, and the phenomena continued. The Warrens claim that this was one of the most tenacious haunting that they have investigated.

Although, not in the book, In 1992, the family was granted a full exorcism by Pope John Paul II. Which they have been free of it every sense. They still live in West Piston, Pa.

A Good starter’s book but not the best one!

### Advantages:
# Good Value for Money: The combined package, i.e. the book + free online GRE Course, is a very good tool to have for a beginner.
# Its greatest merit lies in its Chapters Reviews. The chapters are covered in great detail and are bolstered with a large number of solved examples. The text is quite extensive and exhaustive.
# The answers to the practice questions, in the book, are very detailed and useful. If trivial errors are the bane of your preparation then this book is quite a nifty tool for you.
# Stress on Vocabulary: There is a significant amount of stress on vocabulary building. This is the greatest edge that it has over its competition.

### Disadvantages:
# Difficulty level of questions, specifically in the Quantitative section, could have been better. The practice test set questions are not at par with the Questions by ETS or Manhattan.
# Topics Probability and Statistics are poorly covered! This is a major challenge with the book. These topics have a significant presence in the GRE test however they have been neglected in the book.
# Lack of tests. There are two tests (paper) in the book and a diagnostic test online. However most of other books offer more number of tests and also of better quality.
# Testing analysis tools leave much to be desired for! When compared to the test given by Princeton or Manhattan or Kaplan the test analysis tool falls short.
# Very average AWA section: The coverage of AWA section is not at par with any other top books available in the Market!

Overall it is a balanced book and decent value for money. However, it is not sufficient by itself, if the user wants to score more than 315 points especially not for AWA section. If you are looking to score higher on the GRE you must consider other books. It is highly advisable that you look into ETS GRE as they have actual GRE Questions.

~~~What are some of the other study options that I have?~~~
Some students, in the past, have bypassed Barron’s completely and started more specialized books such as the ETS or Manhattan GRE. For example, Manhattan GRE Set of eight strategy guides come with 8 books that target specific math and verbal areas. You would have a much better shot at scoring 315+ using this (not guaranteed), however they require 2-3 months to complete. ETS has a similar collection of 3 books (general + quantitative + verbal). They also have four tests on CD rom enclosed along with the package.

~~~What is a good study plan using Barron’s GRE?~~~
Since it is a good book for beginner’s, I would recommend that you could start with Barron and finish it within a month, then evaluate which are your areas of strength/ weakness. Based on your analysis you can invest in a book by Manhattan/ ETS to bolster your weaknesses. If probability and Statistics is not your strong suite you will need to refer to another book.

~~~Will this get me to 315+?~~~
This book alone, probably, won’t get you to 315+ score; but for people out of college it would refresh the math and verbal fundamentals. You should seriously consider investing in ETS as they provide you with questions that have appeared in GRE before.

A pretty good one-book GRE guide

I'm a long-time GRE tutor. This book is a good choice if you only use one book in addition to the ETS books, but don't expect it to solve all your GRE problems (as it claims it will).

The authors of this book clearly have taken their task seriously: the book feels professional and it's fairly comprehensive. I'll separate this review into three components: content, technique, and practice material.

Content: all question types and nearly all math concepts are covered and explained. The list of vocab words is good, but "high-frequency" means "high-frequency" on PAST GRE tests. Don't expect these words to show up on the GRE you take - they may or may not.

Technique: I like most of the techniques offered for math and verbal, but for verbal, students should be aware that they'll need to refine and experiment with things like how to read passages and proving their answers. I thought the essay technique was okay, but it needs more depth: most of my students really need a primer on how to construct each part of their essays.

Practice material: the GRE-style practice questions and tests are good, but not great. Real GRE questions are more tougher; they're more complex and wordy.

Overall, this book is a good guide to your study and analysis of real ETS GRE questions. Just don't believe the back of the book which claims that this is the "only book you will need to get the score you want". That's marketing, not reality. To really score high, you will most likely need more: more vocab, more math practice, refined verbal technique, more computer practice tests, and better essay advice.

Good prep book for math

Good prep book for math, but comparatively wimpy on verbal. The level of difficulty of the questions is similar to the Official GRE books. I would suggest getting the official books and using this book to augment your prep. I bought it for a class. Definitely recommend taking a class for anyone wishing to take the GRE, especially since our instructor had some better strategies than the ones offered in this book.Also this book is virtually identical to the 20th Edition, but with changed font/typeface formatting.
