Couldn't Put It Down!

Read it in 3 hours flat this evening. Very well written, nice pacing, wonderful character development. Magnus and crew are very wonderful characters to care about during their trials, which makes the story very gripping to read. Unlike his previous series, the direction of the story flows much more smoothly, not having to worry about multiple viewpoints or flat main characters. There is a slight time reference discrepancy, but nothing that takes away from the flow of the story. It was a fantastic addition to a series that started off with a strong first book. Perhaps this is his best written series yet!

Now a not complaint, but observation for parents.
This series is much more violent than previous Percy Jackson/HoO novels, as the Norse/Heathen mythos is more outright violent than its Greek counterpart. It works well with the type of story Riordan tells, and gives more emotional investment in the plot, but make sure you want your preteen to read about decapitation/gore in such a way. As an adult it added stakes and layers to the story, and was wonderful, but I can see where some parents may be caught off guard by the brutality of some descriptions. Recommend personally for 14+ age range for the casual violent scenes.

A Little Bit More Outside the Box

Why I picked it up: I like wise-cracking teens and Norse Gods. Especially together.

Why I finished it: I mentioned in another review that Riordan's books seem formulaic; while this one isn't any different in terms of the formula department, Riordan has at least mixed it up a little for his readers by going a little bit more outside the box with his characters. They feel more rounded somehow, like even though they are involved in this supernatural world there is still the real world to contend with as well. The fluidity with which the real world relates to the supernatural seems much more urgent and apparent, perhaps because of the juxtaposition between Magnus and Sam. Magnus is dead, but can still cross over to the real world while Sam is still alive and can cross into the world of the dead. Sam still has family and school and everyday teen problems to deal with on top of whatever supernatural duties go along with being a Valkyrie, helping ground the reader even as we are rocketing among the Nine Worlds. Magnus's wit and sarcasm add a certain spin to the dire situations in which our characters seem to find themselves, keeping the reader eager for the sort of tongue-in-cheek style that has defined the protagonist. I think it's somewhat poignant that Riordan has introduced a gender fluid character to the cast - it shows he's keeping with the times and getting in touch with his audience. Really I think what I got most out of this volume is the idea that we might not be able to change where we came from, but we can define who we are in a way that is true to ourselves and how we want the world to see us. We don't all fit the labels that society wants to place on us - we need to be able to defend our identities and be comfortable in our own skins. We all need to have confidence in who we are and what we believe in, even if it might seem strange or hard to understand. And on the flip side, we need to be understanding and supportive of those around us, even if we don't always agree with their point of view - that's how I see it, in any case. It's a surprisingly fast read considering the book is a hefty 480 pages and I'm eager to see what new adventure and danger Magnus and his friends will face when the third book comes out in the fall.

I had a blast reading the first book and was very excited to read the rest. I have to say the side characters really fascinate me and would love to learn or read more about them. I may even like them more than Magnus. I recommend this series for any fan of the author.

The tales here, from various cultures, are not necessarily about wolves; instead, they illuminate fresh perspectives on relationships, self-image, even addiction. An African tale of twins who baffle a man represents the dual nature of woman; from the Middle East, a story about a threadbare but secretly magic carpet shows society's failure to look beyond appearances. Three brief, ribald stories advocate a playful, open sexuality; other examples suggest ways to deal with anger and jealousy. At times, Estes's commentary--in which she urges readers to draw upon and enjoy their Wild Woman aspects--is hyperbolic, but overall her widely researched study offers usable advice for modern women.

A feminist counterpart to Iron John--or, how ``a healthy woman is much like a wolf.'' Est‚s, a Jungian analyst, believes that a woman's wholeness depends on her returning to the sources of her repressed instinctual nature. To illustrate the ways of the ``wild woman,'' the author draws on myths, legends, and fairy tales from a vast and eclectic range of traditions. This collection of stories may well be the most valuable element of the book, which otherwise reads like unedited transcripts of the workshops Est‚s leads to encourage women to return to their ``feral'' roots. Each story demonstrates a particular aspect of woman's experience--relationship, creativity, anger, spirituality, etc. Est‚s finds evidence in the most diverse tales of the necessity for women to reclaim their wildness. The precise nature of this wildness is difficult to fathom, but, at best, it seems to include a genuine capacity to access feelings and to accept one's contradictions, while, at worst, it appears to amount to the kind of self-indulgence that prevailed during the ``me'' generation. Est‚s claims that her book is for every woman, ``whether you be spicy or somber, regal or roughshod''; but her underlying assumption that every woman is free to abandon what holds her back seems ignorant of social and economic realities. The author provides few concrete examples that might help women understand what she expects them to do, and her prose abounds in generalizations and oddities (``the ambitious woman...who is heartfelt toward her accomplishments'') that further undermine her credibility and her considerable scholarship. My Go To Book for healing the injured female within

this book is my go to staple to feed my female soul. if anyone can get it right and deep it is Clarissa. to me, she is like the female version of Joseph Campbell. she totally unfolds the female archetypal characters and souls. if you want a book with meat and bones that talks about the issues of the female character and her relationships with other women ... within her family ... who betray her or abuse her, abandon her or neglect her ... and you have had that happen to you and you need a healing through profound understanding ... then get this book, read it and reread it and digest every bit of hit because there is nothing but soul food in here! thank heaven, God and angels for Clarissa. she is a national jewel and anything she creates speaks to me and i think it will speak to you as well.

I would highly recommend this book to any woman who is on the great journey called life. For women who have lost their way, lost track of the creative/ intuitive voice inside. For women who have found their way back to that creative/ intuitive voice inside. Or for any woman who just needs a boost in their life. This book spoke to me so much, especially as a recovered alcoholic. Learning about how my past has played a part in who I am today, how my addiction has played into my life today, and finding my inner La Que Sabe. Wonderful read for women of all ages.

This book is for someone who wants to be awaken.

If your true wolf nature is calling you, look into it and listen carefully. It might mean that your soul is asking you to awaken and start taking better care of yourself. I was reluctant to get the book at first because I was struggling with the image of a creature with a ferocious attitude, ravenous desires, and unfulfilled appetites. I couldn't have been father from the truth. Once I started reading the book, I leaned that the creature inside me had a beautiful flip side, which helped me heal my old wounds, love this "child," this "ugly ducking," love myself, all of me. I learned that the wolf in me was creative, family oriented, strong, enduring, and extremely loyal to her mate, to her young, and to her pack. The wolf in me was also a feral woman, although it holds true for a feral man as well, who was born wild, not the "out-of-control" wild, but the one with healthy instincts and intact psyche. She became crippled by the excessive control from without, which she then adopted as the control mechanism from within. This mechanism became a cheap substitute, which replaced her natural wiring. She had to find the way back to the original untamed state in order to reclaim her individuality and sovereignty. This book helped me do just that.

Simmons has written what could be termed the bible of technical pen artistry. The technical pen is widely used in drafting and in architectural renderings to make a narrow, consistent line but is often neglected by artists who rely on the quill (flexible nib) pen because of its ability to make lines of various thickness. Through numerous examples, the author demonstrates how to compensate for the lack of a flexible nib by using cross-hatching and line placement to create the desired effects. In an impressive series of drawings, Simmons offers 28 renditions of the same subject, demonstrating how to create specific textures and values for different results. Simmons analyzes everything from the mechanics and maintenance of the technical pen to choosing specific nibs for desired effects. He also considers the use of colored inks. Recommended for graphic arts collections in public and academic libraries.

Gary Simmons has been working with pen and ink and the technical pen for nearly thirty years. Simmons has conducted pen-and-ink drawing workshops nationally for Koh-I-Noor, and he teaches fine arts at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.

This book is excellent but the 2014 printing is not good

I had previously borrowed the 1992 edition from my library and thought the book was excellent and thorough. The book was out of print at the time and I wasn't able to find a used copy at a reasonable price. I recently tried to find one and was pleasantly surprised to see that it was back in print and quickly placed an order. There were bad reviews for the hardcover edition, so I ordered the paperback version. However, I was disappointed when I started flipping through the pages of the 2014 edition.

The content in the book deserves 5 stars. I'm only rating this 3 stars to point out that the quality of the new edition is not great and looks like they photocopied the original on a cheap copier. The printing is inconsistent. In some cases it is too light and in most cases you can not make out the detail of the fine lines due to the poor reproduction. The paper is also thinner. As pointed out in the product description, the paperback copy is grayscale so the section on color is all in black and white.

I was so disappointed that I ended up buying a "like new" copy of the The Technical Pen 1992 edition published by Watson-Guptill from an Amazon third party seller and I would suggest you do the same. My 1992 edition also cost less than $19.99 which was another bonus. You should be able to find a good copy at a reasonable price.

The default sized amazon photos are too small so the comparison for the last two pictures may not be obvious. To see the large picture, click on the title of the review "This book is excellent but the 2014 printing is not good" next to the 3 stars which will bring you to the review on a separate page. After clicking on the small thumbnails to get the larger image to pop up by itself, you can save the larger image to your desktop, or right-click and select properties to get the URL of the image and paste it in another browser window.

I was rather disappointed at the printing however

I don't know really. I bought it in my search for more "killer strokes" and texture ideas as I had first discovered in James Richards' "Freehand Drawing and Discovery: Urban Sketching and Concept Drawing for Designers". I was rather disappointed at the printing however. It must have been the press or something. It seemed like some random binding done on a photocopier low on ink. Isn't it called "The Technical Pen"?? What good is it to me if I can't discern the lines??? Good book regardless. The printing is annoying

Perfect companion book to Guptill's

I finally found a good-condition copy of this at a reasonable price and I am glad I bought it. It is a perfect companion book to Guptill's "Rendering in Pen and Ink: The Classic Book On Pen and Ink". This book has great information on the care and use of the Technical Pen and has more imaginative examples of pen and ink than Guptills more traditional (but, none the less beautiful and important) works. This book also has more on the "process" of doing an initial pencil outline,
choosing pen strokes and building up patterns to create a drawing. It includes a section of problems to avoid with pen strokes and tones etc. which was very helpful to me. I would have never thought of using the patterns the author used to render some of the drawings. I look forward to playing with these in my own drawings. I would recommend getting both of these books and you should have all you need for a really good foundation in pen and ink.
