Opportunities are now Opening up in Africa
By Alastair Browne
One of the authors, John-Paul Iwuoha, requested that I review this book. Both him and the other author Harnet Bokrezion, Ph.D., have lived in Africa and are seeing a new wave of entrepreneurship sweeping the entire continent. Both authors are experts in this field and have the credentials, and experience, to tell you, in this book, how to be successful in your own field of expertise, starting from scratch.
Africa has now become the last frontier, for opportunity in starting your own business, and this is what this book covers. The authors make it clear that this book is not only for Africans but anyone who is willing to come over with an idea and share it with the native Africans, whether one is Chinese, American, European, or anything else. A prosperous Africa will mean a more peaceful Africa, and its time has come.
Africa, and its people, need everything in order not only to survive, but to prosper, and live comfortably. Its lack of goods and services, all over the continent means that anyone with an idea for a business to provide these badly needed goods and services can come over and establish their business, using Africa’s own resources. This will contribute to Africa’s development.
Africa has 54 countries from which to choose. This book list 101 entrepreneurial opportunities in the fields of entertainment, waste management, clothing, mobile phones, food, personal care, child care, education, transportation, electricity, health and wellness, finance, the internet, and other ideas. These categories list sub-divisions under each one, and that list totals to 101 opportunities. These opportunities are what is in high demand for the native Africans.
In these categories the sub-divisions are suggested, but also leaves the reader to use his or her imagination. For example, in wastes, toilet facilities are needed, both stationary and portable, all over Africa due to present unsanitary conditions. How can you supply this? Another example in this category is that in dumps, a lot of garbage can be recycled, and valuable metals salvaged.
A lot of food grown in Africa falls to the ground and rots. Start a system where you can collect these foods and make other foods devoured from them. You can also can them, or process and freeze them for later use. Is there a milk or fish shortage in your area? Start a dairy or fish farm. Use transportation services (that would be established by someone else) for trucks, rails, and boats, to transport food and other products.
In relation, one can set up transportation services for transport of goods and people in the form of cars, trucks, taxis, trains, airplanes, all sorts.
Sell used autos shipped from the U.S. and Europe. Establish an auto repair shop.
Solar power is growing in Africa. Set up a distribution system to sell and install solar panels in cities and even small towns.
Set up security services to protect against criminals, thugs, terrorists.
Import goods. Export African goods worldwide. Set up shops. Process food. Repair items. Set up schools.
Distribute pharmaceuticals. Drugs are needed to deal with contagious diseases. Young girls needs sanitary napkins so they can continue to function without embarrassment.
One can do anyone that individual is good at, for there is a huge demand for literally everything, and these can be distributed. Needs can be filled. The majority of services do not exist right now, so opportunities abound, and the people of Africa DO have the money to pay for them.
In starting a business, to whom would your business appeal? In your present location, what are the problems surrounding the needs of the locals, and how can you deal with them? What can you sell in addition to complement your services? What do you have to offer? What are your ideas?
There are business concepts, niche ideas, top countries and policy guidance, and actions and tips. In each listing, there are countries that are best recommended to start your business in your profession.
In examining each area of the continent, you must look at the problem, shortages, needs, and how a business can fulfill them. Also consider taking advantage of the local resources.
One must note, that before starting any business, they must contact local officials for the proper licensing and whatever other legalities may be required. One also must be warned to stay away from areas infested with terrorists and rogue armies, for that is still a problem in some areas. Also, watch out for extremely corrupt governments. Read the news!
At the end of the book are sections of advice for all businesses. The start-up tells simply how to prepare yourself as you start your business. Simplify, be clear in what you are going to do, get your product or service ready, set up shop, settle all legal matters, (i.e. don’t just start your business, notify your local government for permission and whatever legalities are required. It is very important that you know this.), promote and sell your product, and build local partnerships. You want to be friends with those around you.
The last section is how to start on a shoestring budget. You don’t need a lot of money. You do need capital, and you need to start small and work your way up the ladder. This will require a full commitment and a lot of hard work. Be creative, get funding, interact with other business, but most of all know what you are doing.
Opportunities abound in Africa, and this book tells you how to find them, and they're easy to find, take advantage of them, and to succeed. There are a lot of needs, a lot of shortages, and a dearth of services, and now is the chance for anyone with imagination to come in, fill the void, and become prosperous. With enough of this, Africa itself could finally become prosperous, leading to more peaceful communities, nations, and most of the continent.
It’s there for the taking, but it may not last long.
